The greatest of our festivals in Kerala is no doubt, ONAM! It falls on the month of September and the first month of the Malayalam Calendar, Chingam. A harvest festival, Onam is associated with proseperity, good cheer and harmony. Everyone in Kerala celebrates Onam irrespective of their religion.
It is believed that our King Maha Bali comes back to visit his people once a year on Onam day. The King was considered to be the best for his just and fair ways of administration. His was an ideal Kingdom. We can see many dressed up as Maha Bali everywhere in Kerala, especially shopping centres and public places.
Onam Sadya, the feast of the Onam day is the speciality of the event, everyone has a vegetarian Sadya meal on that day.
